Last Bite of Summer: Dog-friendly eateries for a lunch date with your dog in Cincinnati

There are two places in the Cincinnati area that I had the opportunity to visit with Truffles. One is the perfect lunch spot and the other is a tasty, cold treat for a hot day.

Start with lunch at The Root Beer Stand. This is a cash preferred establishment so be aware before you go, there’s a small transaction fee if you use a credit card. It’s near Trammel Fossil Park so it’s possible to make that dog-friendly stop a part of your day. When we went the line was out the door and it took almost 30 minutes to order and receive our food.

We had chili dogs, but that’s not really what they’re known for, as the name might suggest it’s Root Beer! Truffles was pleased to taste-test the hot dog as I’m sure your dog would be too. There’s ample outside seating but parking can be tight so be prepared. I enjoyed my hot dog very much, and even though I’m not a fan of root beer in general, this was pretty good root beer.

After that, drive to Putz’s Creamy Whip for an ice cream. We usually hit up Graeter’s when we visit but we tried Putz’s this last visit and it was really great. It has a large grass area and picnic area. It can be found near the Mt. Airy Forest and Dog Park. Dairy doesn’t agree with all dogs, but if you’re pup is one to partake, as Truffles is for a lick or two of vanilla, you can’t go wrong at Putz’s.

You can make it just a lunch date or a day of fun hunting for fossils, playing at the dog park, and going for a hike. You could even make it two different days since both spots offer dog-friendly activities nearby and food as well as some form of ice cream. By visiting these pet-friendly establishments you can help send the message that pet-friendly locations are needed and wanted in the Cincinnati area.
