MICHAEL DELLA RIPA, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVIM (SAIM), is a board-certified veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist at MedVet Cincinnati who has been part of the medical team since 2010. He attended the University of New Haven where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. He has trained with veterinary specialists at Louisiana State University, Virginia Tech and Angell Memorial in Boston.

SUSANNA HINKLE SCHWARTZ, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVS-SA, is a board-certified Veterinary Surgeon at MedVet Cincinnati, where she has been part of the medical team since 2011. Dr. Schwartz maintains an interest in all aspects of small animal surgery, with particular interests in spinal surgeries and fractures, complicated soft tissue surgeries, and arthroscopy. She is devoted to ensuring each patient receives the best care possible for the ideal long-term outcome.

VANESSA J. KUONEN CAVENS, DVM, MS, DIPLOMATE, ACVO, is a Veterinary Ophthalmologist at MedVet Cincinnati and MedVet Dayton. She has been on staff at MedVet since 2008. Dr. Kuonen Cavens attended Brigham Young University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Kansas State University where she earned both a Masters of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees. Following her graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Kuonen Cavens completed a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery, a three-year residency in ophthalmology, and earned a Masters of Science at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2004, Dr. Kuonen Cavens was awarded the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists Foundation research grant award. She is the author and co-author of scientific articles published internationally in peer-reviewed journals, including Veterinary Ophthalmology and Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

JEANNE LANE, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVIM (ONCOLOGY) is a board-certified Veterinary Medical Oncologist at MedVet Cincinnati and MedVet Lexington, where she has been part of the medical teams since 2018. Dr. Lane graduated Summa Cum Laude, earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. Following completion of her undergraduate studies, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton, MA. Dr. Lane then spent one year with VCA Veterinary Care in Albuquerque NM, during which time she completed her rotating internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. She next completed a three-year residency at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, TN.

KARL C. MARITATO, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVS-SA, is a board-certified Veterinary Surgeon at MedVet Cincinnati, where he has been part of the medical team since 2010. Dr. Maritato attended the University of Florida, where he earned two Bachelor of Science degrees. At Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, graduating with highest honors and at the top of his class. After completing his residency and becoming a board-certified Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, he played an integral role in the development and introduction of new surgical options for the Cincinnati community.

MAGGIE SCHUCKMAN, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVIM (Cardiology), is a board-certified Veterinary Cardiologist at MedVet Cincinnati and MedVet Lexington, where she has been part of the cardiology team since 2015. Dr. Schuckman attended The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Following her graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Schuckman completed a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Michigan Veterinary Specialists and a three-year residency in small animal cardiology at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario.

EMILY WARD, DVM, is a veterinarian whose practice is limited to Veterinary Dentistry & Oral Surgery. She has been a part of the MedVet Cincinnati team since 2020. Dr. Ward earned her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. Following veterinary school, Dr. Ward completed her residency in Dentistry & Oral Surgery at Eastside Veterinary Dentistry in Woodinville, WA. She is passionate about all aspects of veterinary dentistry & oral surgery but maintains a special interest in advanced periodontal therapy techniques and sighthound and geriatric dentistry. She enjoys working in a large, multi-specialty practice with a collaborative environment.

JENNIFER (JENNY) WELLS, DVM, DIPLOMATE, ACVIM (SAIM), is a board-certified veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist at MedVet Cincinnati where she has been part of the medical team since 2011. Dr. Wells attended Texas A&M University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree graduating Magna Cum Laude. Following her graduation from veterinary school, Dr. Wells completed a yearlong internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital in Denver and a three-year residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.

SHAWN ZIMMERMANN, RVT, CCRP, is a Veterinary Technician and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner at MedVet Cincinnati, where she has been part of the medical team since 2012. Shawn attended the University of Cincinnati where she earned her Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) degree. Following her graduation from technical school in 2003, Shawn worked as a Veterinary Technician at a holistic veterinary practice where she developed a desire to improve the quality of life for dogs and cats through physical rehabilitation. Shawn then completed the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner program.


Our Other Veterinary Professionals

Dr. Katie Hogan is a full-time veterinarian at Grady Veterinary Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. She works with dogs, cats, and exotic companion animals and is dedicated to furthering the human-animal bond. In her free time, she creates online content for her blog, KatieHoganDVM.com, which is dedicated to helping pets, pet parents, and veterinarians live the best lives imaginable.

Dr. Katie is originally from Frankfort, Kentucky. She went to Murray State University for her undergraduate studies and obtained a bachelor’s of science degree in agriculture. She attended Auburn University for veterinary school, graduating in 2016. Outside of veterinary medicine, Dr. Katie enjoys horseback riding, camping, and kayaking. She lives in Kentucky with her wife and their five pets: three dogs, two cats, and a lizard named Buckley.
