Topher: Save the Animals Foundation

Topher is a six year-old chiweenie (chihuahua/dachshund mix) available for adoption with Save the Animals Foundation. His estimated birth date is in 2014.

Topher and gal-pal YamYam were surrendered to an overcrowded county shelter right around Thanksgiving. Having spent the better part of their young chiweenie lives being used/abused as a breeding pair, they are now happily retired from that business and in search of a home to start over as dogs of leisure.

Topher is around six years old (just a kid in little dog years!) and tops out around 13 magnificent pounds. For our volunteers, it was love at first sight…those expressive ears, that ever-wagging tail, and his perky little personality. He was in dire need of dental work when he arrived at our shelter but, 12 fewer teeth later, he is a much happier boy, and will do anything for a snack.

We believe Topher was treated poorly in his previous life. He cowers when you reach for him, and doesn’t like hands over his head or having his harness put on. While he is initially guarded around strangers, it only takes a little patience and a proffered lap for him to reveal his sweet, snugly side. After years of being conditioned to expect rough treatment, he is learning to accept kindness from humans.

Topher is crate-trained and good on leash. He will benefit from continued confidence-building and socialization. Topher and YamYam can be adopted as a pair, but would be equally fine going their separate ways.

Each would be perfectly happy being your one-and-only furbaby, or might possibly be willing to consider sharing your love and attention with another dog. As is often the case with chihuahuas, and especially factoring in his background/trust issues, Topher requests that his inner circle be limited to adults and older kids who can understand and respect his limits and sensitivities.
